Best of Vintage 1960s British Teak Sideboards , but who made them ?

Best of Vintage 1960s British Teak Sideboards , but who made them ?

We specialise in British teak sideboards so when we’re always looking for the best ones and are intrigued when we find new models particularly when we don’t know who the maker or designer was .

In around 2012 we bought a fabulous quality teak sideboard from a house in Wales . It wasn’t labelled but the detailing and size was such that it could only be by a British maker . We searched high and low to find another shown online , but never traced one . Then a couple of years ago another related model came up for sale locally with a receipt from a Newcastle furniture shop . We bought it , but the only information was a model name on the receipt along with a price .

In the last few weeks we’ve sourced 2 more , one of which is identical to one we sold a couple of years ago Click Here To View . One again was sourced locally , the other from the south of England Click Here To View. Unfortunately still no labels or features that link to a known British maker .

The quality of construction , and use of solid teak is similar in standard to early 1960s pieces by Fyne Ladye Furniture , but if anything slightly better . The next nearest in quality terms that we’ve had is very early 1960s pieces by Dalescraft and A Younger . The use of solid oak for the drawer construction and the beautiful dovetailing of the solid teak drawer fronts along with the shaped solid wood internal shelves and other minor detailing is the same throughout .

As with all the very best late 1950s and early 1960s teak that we get , the teak has a glow and natural silky shine when it’s cleaned . We always find that the better the piece the nicer the teak that was used and also the easier it is to clean and restore . It’s one of the reasons we don’t like to buy pieces by the cheaper makers such as Beautility and Stonehill , as they take more work than the best makes and never come up looking as good .

The internal bits that are not normally seen  are the parts which show how much quality there is , so solid oak for drawers and beautiful dovetailing are features that most makers wouldn’t bother with , and that’s true of even some of the premium brands such as Archie Shine .

We go out of our way to buy the best of British vintage teak and will travel further to get it than we would to get standard pieces by G Plan , McIntosh and other well known makes . We get sent lots of photos by sellers , as well as searching auctions up and down the country as well as collecting original makers catalogues . We’d love to know who made these 2 wonderful pieces so if you know anything please please contact us !
