1960’s Danish teak chest of drawers by HJN Mobler.
A top quality 1960s Danish teak chest of drawers by the little known HJN Mobler . This beautiful piece would work well as a TV stand , or as a bedroom piece . Its not labelled or stamped for HJN , but if you do a Google image search you will see it’s a known design . The quality of teak is great , as is the cabinet making and lovely detailing , such as the sides and legs . Unusually it’s fully veneered on the back , which is a sign of an expensive top quality piece , and is extremely rare on Danish pieces from the 1960s .
The design is sometimes ascribed to Swedish designer Nils Jonsson , but we can find no evidence to support this apart from the fact that the handles are very similar to those on one of the many sideboards he designed for Troeds of Sweden , where he was the chief designer at the time .
Not all top quality Danish or British pieces were labelled at the time as many stores did not like to retail branded items , particularly the more exclusive stores such as Heals of London , Harrods and many regional companies like Chapmans of Newcastle and their equivalents .
All it needed was a light clean and polish . The best quality teak pieces we source from the late 1950s to the late 1960s are always made with the best veneers and solid woods , and take less effort and time to bring back to their best than those by more standard mass market makers , whether Scandinavian or British . We rate such pieces as being around 2-3% of pieces made in the early 60s , and far less by the late 60s !
