Aage Christiansen Matador chairs 1960’s. A lovely comfortable relaxing large Danish armchair from the 1960’s , its heavy and beautifully made. Very little is known about Aage Christiansen apart from this design and a couple of others made by a small Danish company called Erhardsen & Andersen which are illustrated in a 1966 Danish interiors magazine advert.
The design is called ” matador ” and the quality of construction is more like what you’d expect from a Danish 1950’s piece than a 1960’s one. 1950s Danish upholstery is usually much heavier structurally with better construction and springing than pieces from the second half of the 1960’s but there is no signs of this with this model. We have this one that was well worn when we got it, so we’ve started the re-upholstery by using a fire retardant barrier fabric to crib 5 ( suitable for domestic and commercial use ) now it just needs your choice of fabric. We have another in original well worn leather so there is a rare opportunity to have a pair. The Danes rarely bought pairs of chairs , or matching sets in the 50’s and 60’s so original sets are hard to find.
You can use your own upholsterer or ours will complete the job in your choice of fabric for a further £150. Its a big chair so will need around 5 metres ( depending on fabric ). The feet are a dark teak.
