This lovely large Danish teak extending dining table was designed by Johannes Andersen and made by Uldum . It’s had 1 careful owner since it was bought new in Newcastle in 1968 .We even have a copy of the original receipt . The top has always been covered so it’s in wonderful vintage condition with no heat or water marks or obvious scratches . Most of the time it has had one of the 2 leaves in it , so the only thing to say is that this 1 leaf is darker around the edge whereas the rest has faded to the edge only . The top having been covered hasn’t faded at all , so the leaves are all on an equal colour , it is just the outside edge .
Pedestal tables are great as the legs don’t get in the way of dining chairs however they’re placed . The downside is that they are often less stable , but in this case the design is so good , as is the manufacture that this isn’t an issue with this model . The pull-out frame that supports the leaves is solid oak , unlike cheaper tables where it’s usually pine .
The top 3 Danish designers are Hans Wegner , Finn Juhl and of course Arne Jacobsen . Johannes Andersen was one of about 10 Danish designers of the time who although a step down from these 3 greats were all highly successful and prolific in their day , and highly respected . His designs are highly sought after and are always practical , and were made by top quality makers such as Uldum Mobelfabrik .
This table is a comfortable 10 seater , so bigger than the standard 8/10 seat tables that you usually find . It will seat 12 less comfortably . We’ve been particularly lucky recently in being able to source a few larger tables , so at present have an unusually good selection . It’s 130cms in diameter ( most circular tables are around 110/120cms ) and each leaf adds a further 60cms ( most leaves are 50cms ) . This extra width and depth make all the difference as to number of chairs it will take .
It’s photographed with the set of 6 Johannes Andersen chairs that came with it , but have since sold .
