Smart 1960s Toothill Wentworth sofa bed for re-upholstery
Amazingly this bright orange is the original fabric , but it has lost some buttons and is showing a little wear , and of course it won’t meet current UK Fire Regulations as is . Its unusual to find this lovely stylish model with buttoned cushions , which must have added to the cost when new .
Our upholsterer will make new foam cushions to meet current UK regulations , and then upholster it in your fabric . If you go for the un-buttoned standard upholstery this will add £230 + VAT + fabric . Buttoning would be extra .You can of course buy it as is , and get your own upholsterer to do the work .
We recommend fabrics by Romo , Camira ,Warwick , Abraham Moon and Eleanor Pritchard and can arrange for samples to be sent on request .
The wood is a dark teak called afromosia , and this model with it’s copper fittings is very distinctive . R.W.Toothill of Newton Aycliffe were a medium sized maker in the 1960s and 1970s , specialising in stylish well made pieces like this . We’ve recently done some research on them and have spoken to people who have had this model from new . All seem to have bought it between 1962 and 1968 . One person still had the 1964 catalogue so was able to tell us that it was called the Wentworth . Bought new in 1964 , they love it so much they had theirs re-upholstered in 2014
Toothill never labelled their pieces apart from a loose swing ticket . We’ve not had this model for about 4 or 5 years , but of course as so often is the case we have amazingly sourced another one also with original cushions , but in a different fabric . We also have 2 different pairs of Toothill chairs arriving soon , both of which would work beautifully with this sofa .
