Spotlight on Hvidt and Molgaard a great Danish design team
The vast majority of Danish designers are only known as individuals , although some will have worked with assistants who later set up their own design businesses . There are other Danish design duos , but by far the best known today are Peter Hvidt and Orla Molgaard Nielsen .
Peter Hvidt ( 1916-1986 ) set up his own studio in Copenhagen in 1942 before joining up in 1944 with the older Orla Molgaard Nielsen ( 1907-1993) . They worked together as designers and architects for over 30 years until 1972 . Over this time they are known to have designed over 250 pieces of furniture for well known makers such as Fritz Hansen , France and Daverkosen ( later France and Son ) and Soborg Mobler . As architects they were responsible for a number of prestigious projects in Denmark as well as acting as consultants for 2 well known bridges !
Many of these furniture designs have now become sought after design classics today . The now iconic pioneering Axe chair was an early design for Fritz Hansen . For France and Daverkosen ( later France and Son ) they designed a number of sofas , chairs and tables including the Minerva series . For Soborg they designed some beautiful top quality pieces with exposed dovetailing details as well as the fabulous dining chair model we’ve just added to our inventory .
As of May 2022 we have a lovely secretaire chest by Soborg , a set of 6 dining chairs by the same maker which we’ve paired with their gateleg table by France and Son . We also have a France and Son 3 seat sofa and chair coming in soon .
